Trinidad & Tobago Carnival – 27th – 28th February 2017

The Trinidad & Tobago Carnival is a stunning spectacle bursting with colour, music and creativity, and the euphoric nature of this event has resulted in similar celebrations around the world, e.g. Toronto’s Caribana, Miami Carnival, London’s Notting Hill Carnival and New York City’s Labor Day Carnival, to name but a few. The carnival is an annual event which is held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

It is the most significant event for the island in terms of its tourism calendar, with a number of cultural events taking place in the run up to the Carnival’s street parade.  The festivities are primarily associated with Calypso and Soca music, with its fast and lively beats providing the soundtrack to the celebrations. Other important elements of the Carnival include, elaborate and colourful costumes, masquerades, pulsating music, fetes, steelpan shows and competitions with artistic talent of all abilities taking part. There is a large masquerade of bands with spectacular and often revealing costumes, and pulsating music providing for a grand scale, stunning and exhilarating party where everyone is welcome to join in with the ‘jumping’ and ‘waving’ of the crowd. The party will often go on until the sun comes up. There is a mix of people and diverse cultures and ethnic groups that form the island, and these influence the Trinidad Carnival.

The Nylon Pool set in Tobago’s Bucco Reef got its name from its clear and calm water. The sandy stretch in the middle of the coral is like a natural swimming pool half a mile out at sea. It’s an obligatory stop on the glass-bottomed boat the leaves from Pigeon Point.

About a third of Trinidad’s population is Hindu, descending from Indian immigrants in the nineteenth and early centuries, which results in major Hindu festivals being celebrated all year round. Phagwah is a joyous spring festival, were you celebrate by singing, dancing and throwing vividly coloured dyes and powders over each other. Why not join in and by the end of the celebrative evening you’ll be the same deep shade of purple as everyone else.

Trinidad is famous around the world for its calypso and socca, but there is also a thriving underground music scene centred on small bars and pubs, that plays rhythms of rock and roll with calypso and reggae, creating a unique sound.

With such a mixture of cultures on the T&T Island, you will find food choices that range from Creole to Chinese, West Indian to European and African to Indian. Dining out options on Tabago are more affordable, but there are many recommended restaurants in Trinidad with such a mishmash of cultures present on the T&T islands, visitors will find food choices that range from Creole to Chinese, West Indian to European, African to Indian. Dining options on Tobago are more affordable, but travel writers recommend the restaurants on Trinidad, especially around Port of Spain. Here you can try some roti ( Flat bread stuffed with chicken, fish, goat and curry) and wash it down with some Planters punch a popular drink made with grenadine and fruit juices curaco and rum.

Take a visit to this lovely island you’re sure to come back.
